The Chevrotain’s origin is Malaysia. This mouse deer was thought extinct for thirty years until recently. About the size of a rabbit, the chevrotain is the smallest mammal with hooves, and male chevrotains have fangs! Tales of the Chevrotain say that it has a knack for fooling other animals so it can escape from trouble.

Patterns in this painting were inspired by traditional Malaysian batik fabric.

Trickster tales suggest the conditions of life and spirit, the acquisition of knowledge and power, and how to survive. Many of these legends are hundreds of years old - told through stories that allowed people to be together, learn, and pass the time. Tricksters teach the art of surviving and triumphing in the face of inhospitable environments, and remind us that sometimes we must do the unexpected in order to succeed.
