The Raven is from the Pacific North West coast with origins from the Haida people of 6-8,000 years ago. Just like many other Tricksters, he is a shape-shifter and prankster. Raven stole the sun from a few in order to share it with the world, then tossed the light into the sky, creating the sun, moon and stars.

The background image was created by combining symbols commonly found in art of the Northwest Coast: ovoids, u-forms, s-forms, and split Us. These were used to fashion an abstract sun.

Trickster tales suggest the conditions of life and spirit, the acquisition of knowledge and power, and how to survive. Many of these legends are hundreds of years old - told through stories that allowed people to be together, learn, and pass the time. Tricksters teach the art of surviving and triumphing in the face of inhospitable environments, and remind us that sometimes we must do the unexpected in order to succeed.
